I thought I would miss the Christmas posts from my friends and family on Facebook. I logged on to get a peak of their smiling faces, their children’s eyes lighting up at the sight of their gifts under the tree, and the images of their overfilled plates of Christmas dinner.
I was not disappointed, I seen all of it…and more.
But I think today was the first time in quite some time where I didn’t feel as though I needed to see it. I didn’t need to keep up with it.
I didn’t miss it.
The love and joy and beauty of the holiday season was there, but I didn’t need to be part of it.
I don’t know what to make of it other than that kinda feels good.
The texts I received from the few family and friends who do have my number was plenty enough. I shared a couple of pics of our food and myself in our matching pjs, but doing so gave me little joy. Either the break is working or it is working too well, which I fear I will use as grounds for not returning at all. And lets be honest, creating on social media is a literal business for me, one I stumbled upon, and one that I am absolutely good at (even if I am not being paid my worth).
It is a business of my creation, allowing me to help others in the way I can find myself most useful to their causes, teach others, and still provide for my little family. I can’t quit social media, but I can find a way to work around being on it so damn much.
Oh, let me mention this, if you don’t have the Substack app, it’s a free download and I find it to be a better read on there than in email. You will get notifications whenever your favorite writers on here post and you can read it straight from the app. You can still read it from your email as well. To download click the link below:
Quick-ish rundown of our family’s Christmas:
decided that it was in our best interest to stay put and not travel anywhere.
had the perfect idea to create a buffet of nontraditional Christmas food to eat on Christmas Eve and save the leftovers for Christmas.
meal consisted of: smoked brisket; homemade ravioli stuffed with lamb, ricotta, and spinach; cornbread dressing; Jamaican curry chicken with rice and peas, two pecan pies (one chocolate, one regular), and a store-bought lemon poundcake for Aidan.
we didn’t decorate the tree at all until late last night and all we put on it was candy canes that Aidan ate while we slept.
Charlie, our dog, wore his Christmas sweater that was too big for him last year, but fits him perfectly this year.
we didn’t really do gifts this year as the kids still had boxes of gifts from last year that are unopened, so we decided to just open those and save the money on buying new presents for trips next year.
spent Christmas Eve cooking, talking, and watching movies.
Christmas will be pretty much the same, replacing cooking with eating.
placed 10 dollar bets on whether my sister was going to mess up her green bean casserole. Jojo has lots of faith in her, he felt she would nail it.
we will probably drive around tonight, car full of Motown Christmas songs and hot cocoa while we look at the lights and decorations around town.
Pretty uneventful Christmas…and I kind of like it.
Happy Holidays, friends.
Here’s some of my favorite photos from this weekend and this past week.
